Workers' Compensation
Draws 2,000 Attendees
To Mandalay Bay Resort
Las Vegas recently welcomed about 2,000 visitors who came to learn about developments in workers' compensation. The 15th annual Workers' Compensation and Disability Conference & Expo was held Nov. 14-16 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and rooms were sold out early for this popular conference, held for the first time in Las Vegas.
The conference included an expo hall with some 320 exhibitors who provided information on products and services that meet needs in the industry, from transportation and language services to medical equipment.
The conference provided educational opportunities and feature speakers, among them Michael Melnik, an Occupational Therapist who founded his own company to help provide safer and more productive workplaces.
He advised the management leaders in the audience to rethink how they train employees to follow safety rules and to take care of themselves in the workplace. "We have to look at our training models and create an environment that encourages safety and productivity," Melnik said. He indicated that simply telling people what they already know is not very effective.
As an example, he pointed out to the audience that there is twice as much pressure on the lower back when one is sitting, then when a person is standing, but seldom do people get up and stretch their back when they are at work or at home. Melnik said a system has to be created in the workplace that gets the attention of workers, that "raises the bar" of expectations.
Changing the culture of the workplace was a common theme for speakers at the conference, with the hope that management would take the ideas back to their companies and put them in place.
