Q&A with Betty Stover
South Florida Case
Manager of the Year
•Voice: Were you taken by surprise by the award and what does it mean to you at this point in your career?
•Betty: Yes I was very surprised. It is a tremendous honor to be named Case Manager of the Year by my peers. Certainly it caps my years of dedication to Case Management through South Florida Case Management Network (SFCMN) and Case Management Society of America (CMSA).
•Voice: What have been some of the biggest changes in case management over the years?
•Betty: Case Management has been defined, although occasionally it continues to be miss-used. It addresses problems and needs by assessment, then creating a plan with goals for resolution.
Great strides have been made, especially by CMSA to involve related organizations for combined knowledge and solutions through networking. CMSA has published “Standards of Practice” which is updated as needed as case management grows and evolves.
•Voice: Do you see young people coming into the profession? What does the future hold in this regard?
•Betty: I believe young people are interested in the profession. It is very satisfying and rewarding to be a case manager. Many young people are not satisfied with the nurse shortage in hospitals, nor do they want to work in physician offices, thus case management, especially field case management, is rewarding.
•Voice: You have held offices of leadership over the years and worked to help bring awareness to case management. How important is this kind of participation?
•Betty: It is very important. Networking is vital to any case manager. The educational component provides the cutting edge of new and improved methods available to the case manager. Members of the organization lead by example.
I personally am always spreading the word about SFCMN and CMSA because its benefits are many to both the professional as well as the vendor. You must participate in what you believe in and I believe in SFCMN and CMSA. It has been very rewarding to me personally over the years. I have met and made new friends from around the world and have learned so much through them and the organizations. I would not change anything.
