Rehab Nurses Offered
Insight into Facing Change

Priscilla Smith-Trudeau, RN, brought her years of personal and professional experience to the lectern as keynote speaker at the Florida Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (FSARN) conference held in June.

Her topic was "Wisdom of the Ages: Developing the Resilience to Thrive in Change" and her first recommendation for attending nurses was to respond to change, rather than react to it. This requires fundamental adjustments in attitude and outlook, she indicated.

Most professionals are familiar with the cycle of change: State I: Denial, Stage II: Anger & Resistance, Stage III, Exploration and Acceptance and Stage IV: Commitment. Smith-Trudeau sought to equip the nurses with keys to adjusting to change. One way is to understand that change can be for the better.

"How often have you lost a job or relationship, only to connect with a better situation later?", she noted. On another point: "Until we learn to live our lives in the flow of the present, we can never really deal with change effectively." And, when all else fails, as it sometimes will, Smith-Trudeau emphasized that "at times things are moving so rapidly that all we can do is trust."

She suggested to the rehab professionals that they analyze their internal changes and whether they are keeping pace with external changes in life?

Finally, she noted that personal responsibility is necessary for effective change. "No one else is responsible for your happiness, fulfillment, satisfaction, competence, health or life situation but you."

Ed. Note: Priscilla Smith-Trudeau, RN, is president of Wealth in Diversity Consulting, LCC. She is a frequent speaker and has authored articles and a book entitled: "Peaceful Warrior Nurse."
