Bruce Wilkinson, CSP has extensive experience in human resources, loss prevention and workforce training. He has also worked as a police officer and served in the Marines. As a motivational speaker he has been able to draw on his personal experiences.
But nothing he experienced in life compared to the day that Hurricane Katrina swept away most of his hometown of New Orleans while Wilkinson was on the road speaking to workers' compensation professionals in Georgia. Even as he dealt with the crisis at home, he found a way to meet his commitment to speak at the Georgia Workers' Compensation conference in Atlanta in 2005.
The audience was moved to tears on that day, as he described his concern for the lives of his family, whom he could not contact, even as he brought his message.
The scene was recreated this August, two years after Katrina, as Wilkinson returned to the professionals who shared in his personal crisis. There were hugs and handshakes and then a packed audience applauded and cheered as the motivational speaker spoke of the challenges we face in today's world.
A crisis has a way of bringing people together and putting into focus the trivial concerns of day-to-day life and Wilkinson emphasized that "enough is enough" when it comes to small and petty disagreements that tear at the fabric of society.
Wilkinson's family survived the hurricane and his daughter who went into premature labor when Katrina arrived, gave birth to a healthy daughter. How do we know? At the end of his talk he held up her photograph to show the audience.
Bruce Wilkinson wasn't just speaking to adjusters, attorneys, case managers, doctors, workers' compensation administrators and nurses, he was talking to a professional family and the Georgia professionals in attendance welcomed him home with a standing ovation.
