Florida Plans for Mentoring Day

The Able Trust and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is inviting everyone to participate in this year’s Florida Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) Statewide Kickoff Celebration and Career Fair for students with disabilities. This signature event will take place on October 2, 2008 at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando.

This year’s Career Fair will feature a keynote breakfast and ribbon cutting ceremony with Florida’s top leaders, including 2008 Honorary Chair, Mr. Harris Rosen. The event will also offer educational sessions, hands-on resume and interview skills workshops, assistive technology demonstrations, as well as networking with state and national employer booths.

This is our 2nd annual DMD career fair, which had an attendance of nearly 600 high school and college students in 2007. Organizers anticipate another great event this year, with the support already growing, thanks to top sponsors such as American Express, Publix and Clear Channel Radio. Exhibitor information is available offering an opportunity to market your company to a pool of future employees who are recognized as being dependable, loyal and valuable additions to the workplace.

Florida Disability Mentoring Day, which will be officially commemorated on October 15, 2008, has grown significantly since its inception in 2002. During DMD, approximately 1,100 students with disabilities and employers are matched across Florida for a one-on-one job shadowing experience. DMD gives students an opportunity to learn more about the workplace and see the day-to-day responsibilities required of a person in their career field of interest.

Participation and support of Disability Mentoring Day and the Kickoff/Career Fair enhances the event, and encourages more businesses to break down barriers to ensure Floridians with disabilities are included in the workforce.

Exhibit and DMD sponsorship opportunities are now available. If you have any questions or need more information, contact Kristen Knapp of the Able Trust at 888.838.2253 or kristen@abletrust.org.
