Brain Injury Program
Names New Director

Communicare Inc. has announced that Gordon Horn, Ph.D has been brought on board as the Director of Programs at its Clearwater-based program which serves individuals with acquired brain injury and neurological impairment.

The transition represents a major development as company cofounder and former Program Director, Neil Galloway, Ph.D moves aside to concentrate on developing and training staff and expanding Communicare's services in the community.

"This is a milestone for Communicare," said President and cofounder, Steve Wells. "Dr. Galloway has passion and drive and it is his gift that he can draw people in. He will be working with the middle and senior management team," Wells added.

His successor, Dr. Horn, brings an extensive background in brain injury service, from intensive care, inpatient rehabilitation, to outpatient programs. His experience includes inpatient and outpatient administration and clinical work, teaching and private practice.

Until he took on his new position at Communicare, Dr. Horn was in involved in various hospital-based committees and co-chaired several programs, in addition to being a team leader for inpatient rehabilitation at Florida Hospital, where he was recruited in 1997 from Duke University Medical Center. Joining Communicare is an extension of a lifelong progression that began in his junior year of college. "I took a neurophysiology course and from then on I was hooked," Dr. Horn told the Voice Newspaper.

The new Director of Programs is no stranger to Communicare. Having a consultative relationship, he has come to know the team and the trademark dynamic personal approach that Dr. Galloway has fostered. "We will build on the program that is in place and continue to develop new clinical services. That is one of the strengths of Communicare and what drew me to make this career change," Dr. Horn said.

He will also continue his private practice. "It is a good way to keep my clinical and neurodiagnostic skills sharp," he noted. Dr. Horn has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Central Florida for seven years, and is in the credentialing process with the University of South Florida, College of Medicine. Communicare, Inc. is affiliated with USF's Neurological Surgery/Physical Medicine & Psychiatry programs.

For Dr. Galloway, who is also Vice President of Communicare, the move makes sense. "We want to ensure we have all the appropriate clinical components in place to help people, and to extend our services," he emphasized.

"We still want to be viewed as a community-based program. This is an opportunity to increase that by developing more community resources," Dr. Galloway added. "By bringing Dr. Horn to Communicare we have made a move to better our programs and services for those individuals with brain injury and their families. That is what it is all about and why we do what we do."

Ed. Note: Communicare Inc. provides specialized assisted living facilities serving individuals with acquired brain injury and neurological impairment.
