Lightning Strike and Electrical Shock Conference Timely
Author: | Saturday July 04, 2009
Storms can often include tornadoes and lightning at the same time.
Lightning Strikes
Conference Topic
Florida is the lightning strike capital of the United States and the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the state. The odds might be long on getting struck, but in Florida you are twice as likely to be a victim as in any other state. Nationwide there are more than 500 lightning deaths and generated electrical deaths per year.
For those who survive lightning strike or electrical shock, the physical challenges can be devastating. There can be cardiac problems, brain injury, spinal cord injury, hearing loss, burn wounds and post traumatic stress disorder, to name a few.
These are some of the challenges that will be discussed at the 2009 Lightning Strike/Electric Shock Survivors International (LS&ESSI) conference being held Aug. 5-7 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Michael Smith, Program Manager, Outpatient Services, of Communicare, Inc. in Clearwater, FL, is a member of the LS&ESSI board and will be joined at the conference by two Florida experts; Gordon Horn, Ph.D. and Anthony Gamboa, Ph.D. (Dr. Horn is Director of Programs & Clinical Services at Communicare, Inc.).
Dr. Horn will speak on neuropsychological impairment and recovery and Dr. Gamboa will speak on vocational economics.
