CASE MANAGERS PART OF POLICY CHANGES IN HEALTH CARE
Author: | Saturday July 04, 2009
At their annual conference, members of the Case Management Association of America heard the latest on efforts to promote their profession.
CMSA Part of Health Care Planning
"Now is your time", proclaimed Cheri Lattimer to a cheering audience at the annual Case Management Society of America (CMSA). She was referring to the major overhaul of the health care system in the U.S. as proposed by President Obama and other national leaders.
CMSA has been lobbying hard with a focus on making sure case management and the definition of who is a case manager are included in legislation being written in both houses of Congress. "We believe that case management should be a covered service, no matter what the plan. If we do not push now, someone else will," Latimer told case managers at their annual conference held in Phoenix in June.
In anticipation of new legislation, CMSA has drawn up a "model law" that defines the role of case managers, the definition of a case manager and other issues that the organization believes should be addressed in the move toward health care reform.
The plans were to have been submitted by July 1 of this year.
CMSA Foundation Formed
In recent years there have been requests to donate funds to CMSA for special needs such as helping after Hurricane Karina or to honor past leaders, but the corporate structure of the organization did no permit accepting such support.
As a result the Board of Directors authorized forming a CMSA Foundation as a 501(c)(3) public charity to support the needs of those involved through leadership programs, educational forums and publications. Categories include: General donation to support the CMSA mission; Memorial Gift to celebrate the memory of someone; Honor gift to commemorate a special person or occasion.
Visit www.cmsa,.org for more information or call the CMSA Foundation office at 501-225-2229.
